Temptation: Shortcut or Short Circuit

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.   “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”   (Matthew 4NIV)

“I don’t want all the kingdoms!  (Well, not yet.)  I just want one.  I really don’t think of it as a ‘kingdom’ anyway.  It’s just a small thing, really . . . and I don’t see why I shouldn’t have it.  Everybody else seems to have what they want.  Surely I deserve this one thing!”

You know the lure.  It does seem such a small thing after all . . .

just one craving to indulge . . . just one resentment to harbor . . . one offense to begrudge . . . one anger to hold onto . . . one self-pity to nurse . . . one addictive habit to justify . . . one jealousy to embrace . .

. one justification for not being responsible . . . one harsh word that “deserved” to be spoken . . . one lust that won’t go away . . . one goal that I must reach (no matter what) . . . one excuse to keep the guilt from being mine.  I just want this one place where I can be “in charge.”

Who knew that the embracing of this one little “kingdom” for me would be so painful, so costly, and so destructive to the rest of my life?

Jesus knew.  He knew because the temptation for Him was real . . . just as real as yours is to you.  He knew that all the kingdoms of the world did belong to Him before their rebellion. He knew that they were intended to bow to Him and bring Him glory.  And Satan was offering to deliver them to Him without a cross.  Short-cuts seem to make so much sense.

The next time your lure beckons you, remember that Jesus has been here.

. . and that He is present with you in the midst of your temptation urging and empowering you to say “No!”  The evidence of His struggle against temptation was left in a blood-stained garden the night before they crucified Him.  But Jesus said “No” to the lure that enticed Him.  He said “No” because the world’s kingdoms are destined for destruction . . . and because providing the only satisfactory sacrifice for your sin was the fulfillment of His Father’s purposes.

Say “No!”  You are not alone.  He Who accompanies us is no stranger to our journey.  If we watch, we will find His fingerprints.  He has already been there.

This was written by a good friend of mine.  Thought I would share.

Personal Holiness matters.  If you know just one thing, know Jesus.
